What You Get
What is the Australian Consumer Law?
The Australian Consumer Law is national law that covers general standards of business conduct, unfair trading practices, basic consumer rights (which are called consumer guarantees) and the regulation of consumer product safety.
Under ACL, when you buy products and services they come with automatic guarantees that they will be fit for purpose and of acceptable quality. If you buy something that is not right, you have consumer rights. This includes the right to ask for a repair, replacement or refund as well as compensation for loss or damages, and being able to cancel a faulty service.
Frequently Asked Questions
If you run a business, you need to be aware of the Australian Consumer Law. It’s important to understand your obligations and how the ACL affects your business and its practices. The ACL is enforced by the ACCC and you can face serious fines if you are found to have violated the law (e.g. for misleading and deceptive conduct).
